Rehearsing Realities – Chaos as Composition with STEFAN JOVANOVIĆ KAASA

Research Project
Week 2 13:00 – 19:00

This research project explores composition as chaos and chaos as choreography. Image-based improvisation is the primary method, drawing from bodily impulses, somatic exploration, dream fragments, poetic texts, and archetypal imprints that surface through movement and attention.

While we root ourselves in the dance studio as a place of grounding, crafting, and reflection, we will also travel together to selected locations within Vienna to observe, respond to, and challenge contemporary mythologies. These sites may include spaces of worship, sites of art-making, of gathering as well as those places of abandonment and forgotten dreams. These excursions function as compositional provocations, feeding back into the studio work as material, image, and score.

At its core lies a guiding question: how do we make sense of the chaos we are living in today – a moment when social, political, and cultural systems of composition are visibly failing and in need of new imaginaries? Rather than resolving chaos, the research project treats it as a generative force. We ask how chaos can become a tool for scenographic and compositional magic, and how it can be structured so that what we do in the studio matters beyond its walls.

Daily sessions combine rhythmic movement, vocal and vagal-based exercises, symbolic and gestural dancing, and explorations with costume, masking, and material transformation as compositional tools. These elements introduce productive instability – disrupting learned movement patterns and inviting participants to embody archetypal, mythical, or other-than-human states. Participants are welcome to bring their own costumes or masks.

Practices are cumulative: intuitive explorations open into scores that expand and deepen across the week, moving fluidly between free generation and conscious shaping. Any touch and contact-work will be intentional, relational, optional, and always negotiated through consent.

This is a space for movers, dreamers, and witches who wish to expand their compositional language beyond repetition – into ritual, symbolism, and embodied imagination. Together, participants build a collective ritualised composition: part score, part offering, part rehearsal for futures not yet lived.
