The Mythic Body with FARAH DEEN & UMESHI RAJEENDRA

Research Project
Week 3 10:00 – 16:00

Farah and Umeshi first met in Sri Lanka in 2023 during Farah’s re-rooting journey to the island. Their encounter opened a dialogue around shared and differing lineages, diasporic experience, and embodied histories, which became the starting point for their ongoing research collaboration, Bodies in Between.

Both teaching artists have multiple cultural heritages and connections to Sri Lankan roots, and live and work between cultural spaces. Through movement, from House Dance and Hip Hop to Kandyan to Bharatanatyam to contemporary diasporic practices, along with voice, rhythm, and collective exploration, participants are invited to explore the body as a living archive, carrying traces of memory, lineage, imagination, and lived experience.

Rather than returning to fixed traditions, myth is approached as a creative and decolonial practice: a way of unlearning given forms and opening space for multiplicity in the body. Together participants ask how bodies with different histories and cosmologies can meet and move, and how difference can become a source of relation, curiosity, and collective imagination.

Physical touch is not a central element of this research and is not required for participation. The teaching philosophy is grounded in curiosity, care, and collective exploration.
