Connecting Meaning to Movement with LLOYD NEWSON

Field Project
Week 4 13:00 – 19:00

In keeping with the title, this exploration is dedicated to connecting movement with meaning, emphasising a discourse-based approach over random or abstract dance steps. Participants in this English-language workshop must be willing to use verbatim texts as inspiration for the construction of movement.

Sending a short application video outlining interest and showing choreography is a requirement for participation.

Additional requirements for this Field Project

If you’d like to be considered for the course, please provide the following:

  1. A video, in English, of you talking about why you’d like to do the course. The video should be no more than 1 minute in duration.
  2. a 3-minute video* as an example of your choreography/movement that supports the intent of the Field Project i.e., that shows you understand the connection between meaning and movement.

    * This video should be taken front-on, in a fixed position, sufficiently wide (to see the whole body/bodies), so we can clearly see your choreography/dancing, but not so wide that we have trouble seeing the work. Footage that is shaky, shot from too far away or too close, or for example that features dark clothing against a dark background that makes it difficult for us to see what you/your dancers are doing, will not be considered. Please do not edit cut the video, it should be one continuous take. If we are initially interested in your submission, we may request a further video of your work.

  3. ensure the video is posted to a site like Vimeo or YouTube and provide a link (and password if required).
  4. Successful applicants will be sent two tasks to complete prior to commencement of the Field Project.

Please note that text may be used within the submitted choreographic work, but if it is, it should be spoken in English.
